Maternal-fetal medicine specialists are obstetricians with three additional years of training in high-risk pregnancy.

An MFM Doctor does the following:

  • Manages the mother’s existing health problems and their impact on the pregnancy
  • Addresses complications developed during pregnancy or childbirth
  • Conducts tests to check fetal growth and development
  • Checks for birth defects and genetic disorders
  • Diagnoses and manages birth defects, heart problems, and blood disorders in a developing baby
  • Provides recommendations for future pregnancies
